Awash National Park

Awash National Park covers roughly 756 km² of savanna, scrubland, and volcanic terrain along the Awash River in Ethiopia's Great Rift Valley, established in 1969 as one of the country's first protected areas. The park is home to Beisa oryx, Soemmering's gazelle, striped hyena, and more than 450 recorded bird species, making it one of the most accessible wildlife destinations in the Horn of Africa. The Awash Falls, where the river plunges into a narrow basalt gorge near the park's southern boundary, are a scenic highlight within easy reach of the main gate. The surrounding lowlands are traditional territory of Afar pastoralists, adding a cultural layer to any visit. Most exploration is done by 4WD vehicle on unpaved tracks, with lodge accommodation available near the entrance.
