Atherton Tableland

The Atherton Tableland is an expansive highland plateau of the Great Dividing Range in tropical North Queensland, sitting roughly 700 to 1,000 metres above sea level southwest of Cairns. The landscape is shaped by ancient volcanic activity — crater lakes such as Lake Eacham and Lake Barrine, formed in collapsed volcanic vents, are among the clearest freshwater lakes in Australia. Dense tropical rainforest alternates with productive farmland well-known for dairy, avocado, and coffee cultivation, with local produce sold at farmers' markets in towns like Yungaburra and Atherton. Waterfalls including the photogenic Millaa Millaa Falls tumble through the tablelands and form natural swimming holes surrounded by jungle. The region is also prime habitat for endemic wildlife, including the flightless southern cassowary, and offers hiking trails, ridge-top viewpoints over the Coral Sea coastline, and kayaking on the crater lakes.
