Bahla Fort

Bahla Fort is one of the most imposing mud-brick fortresses in the Arab world, perched on the edge of the oasis town of Bahla about 40 kilometres west of Nizwa. In 1987 it became Oman's first UNESCO World Heritage Site, listed together with the twelve-kilometre earthen wall that still encircles much of the surrounding oasis town. The fort's origins trace to the early medieval period, with its current form shaped by the Banu Nebhan dynasty, who controlled Bahla between the 12th and 15th centuries. Visitors explore a labyrinth of rammed-earth towers and corridors, with the battlements offering wide views across date-palm groves and the foothills of the Hajar Mountains. The site is open daily from 08:00 to 19:00.
