Zubarah

Zubarah is an abandoned ruined city on the northern coast of Qatar, about 105 kilometers from Doha, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013. The settlement flourished during the 18th and early 19th centuries as a pearl-trading hub and fishing port on the Persian Gulf, growing into one of the most significant towns in the region before being depopulated after regional conflicts. Today the site consists of mud-brick wall remnants, the ghostly outlines of streets, and the largely intact Zubarah Fort — an early 20th-century structure and the only building open to visitors. Ongoing archaeological excavations have exposed a remarkably legible urban grid of residential quarters, mosques, and defensive walls, offering an unusually unaltered window into pre-modern Gulf town planning.
