Contemporary History
The birthplace of the House of Saud sits in the historic Diriyya district on the western edge of Riyadh, marking the origin of the Al-Saud family whose political rise began around 1744 through a pivotal alliance with religious reformer Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab. The site's traditional Najdi mud-brick architecture reflects the austere building style of central Arabia's pre-oil era. Now accessible as a museum, it traces the founding of a dynasty that established the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1932 and has since grown to an estimated 15,000 living members.
