Bambouseraie d'Anduze

The Bambouseraie de Prafrance, tucked 2 km north of Anduze at the foot of the Cévennes, holds the largest bamboo grove outside Asia — an improbable botanical wonder in the red-clay soils of the southern French Gard département. The park was founded in 1856 by botanist Eugène Mazel, who returned from extensive travels through Indochina with an ambition to naturalize tropical species — bamboo, palms, ginkgos — in the Mediterranean microclimate of the Languedoc. Listed as a historic monument, the grounds today feature winding paths beneath bamboo canopies reaching 20 metres, an Asian-inspired garden, and a greenhouse of tropical plants. Walking through the dense culms creates an unexpectedly hushed and almost otherworldly atmosphere. The park is open February through mid-November, with hours ranging from 9 a.m. in peak summer to 5 p.m. in the shoulder months.
