Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Miracles, Caacupé

The Basílica de la Virgen de los Milagros is the Roman Catholic cathedral of Caacupé and Paraguay's foremost national shrine, holding the papal title of Basilica minor and serving as the seat of the Diocese of Caacupé. Founded in 1765 in the colonial baroque style, it enshrines the statue of the Virgen de los Milagros — Our Lady of Miracles — to whom generations of Paraguayans have attributed miraculous healings. Every year on December 8th, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims converge on Caacupé on foot from across the country in one of South America's largest religious gatherings. Outside the feast day, the basilica remains a place of quiet devotion, its dome a landmark above the small city of Caacupé.
