Basilica di San Savino

The Basilica di San Savino is a Roman Catholic church in Piacenza and one of the finest surviving examples of Lombard-Romanesque architecture in the Emilia-Romagna region. Built around 1100 as a monastic church, it holds the title of basilica minor and is dedicated to Sabinus of Piacenza, a 5th-century bishop venerated as the city's patron saint. The building's layered history is immediately legible: the austere Romanesque interior and its vaulted crypt date to the 11th century, while the exterior facade received Baroque modifications in later centuries. Designated an Italian national monument, the basilica is protected at the highest level of heritage law. The crypt — with its rows of carved capitals and the tomb shrine of San Savino — remains the most atmospheric space in the building.
