Basilica of the Good Jesus of the Mount

The sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte crowns a wooded hill on Braga's eastern edge, pairing a neoclassical basilica begun in 1772 with one of Europe's most theatrical baroque monumental staircases. The zigzagging ascent climbs 116 metres over roughly 600 steps, its landings marked by allegorical fountains and chapels representing the Stations of the Cross. Pilgrims have climbed the stairway on their knees for centuries in penitential devotion — a tradition still visibly practiced today. Those preferring a gentler ascent can board the 1882 hydraulic funicular, the oldest on the Iberian Peninsula, which ingeniously uses the weight of descending water-ballasted cars to pull ascending ones uphill without electricity. At the summit, a broad terrace reveals a sweeping panorama over the Minho basin and the rooftops of Braga, surrounded by a shaded hillside park of ponds and woodland paths.
