Basilica Palatina Santa Barbara

The Basilica Palatina di Santa Barbara is the private court chapel of the Gonzaga dukes inside Mantua's Palazzo Ducale, commissioned in 1562 by Duke Guglielmo Gonzaga as a palatine church under the patronage of Saint Barbara. Its Renaissance interior is sober and imposing, consistent with Gonzaga's desire to establish an independent liturgical tradition separate from the local diocese — an unusual dynastic assertion that required a special papal concession. The chapel forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage–listed Palazzo Ducale complex. Current opening hours are limited and weekday visits are generally closed, making weekend services one of the few opportunities to see the interior.
