Battle of Britain Memorial

The Battle of Britain Memorial stands on the chalk cliffs at Capel-le-Ferne in Kent, roughly 500 metres from the English Channel, commemorating the RAF aircrew who fought off the Luftwaffe during the summer of 1940. Designed as a three-bladed propeller nearly 80 metres across — a shape fully legible only from the air — the memorial features a stone figure of a seated pilot sculpted by Harry Gray, flanked by full-scale replicas of a Hawker Hurricane and a Supermarine Spitfire. On a clear day the viewpoint over the cliff edge reaches to the French coast, the same approach corridor the German formations used during the battle. Managed by the Battle of Britain Memorial Trust, the site is open year-round and free to visit.
