Brest Fortress

Brest Fortress, located in present-day Belarus, is one of the most significant World War II memorial sites in the post-Soviet world. The 19th-century fortification complex gained enduring fame when its garrison mounted weeks of fierce resistance following the German invasion of June 22, 1941 — cut off, outgunned, and without reinforcement. In 1965 the Soviet government awarded the fortress the unique honorary title of 'Hero-Fortress', the only fortification to receive such a distinction alongside the twelve Hero Cities. The memorial complex today includes the monumental sculpture 'Courage', an obelisk with an eternal flame, and preserved ruins of garrison buildings that give the site a stark, unmediated atmosphere of the 1941 siege.
