Belle Isle Park

Belle Isle is a 3.9 km² island in the Detroit River, connected to the city by the MacArthur Bridge and in use as a public park since 1845. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the island packs a remarkable range of facilities into a compact space: Detroit's only urban beach, the Dossin Great Lakes Museum — which houses the pilothouse of the ill-fated freighter Edmund Fitzgerald — a city-run golf course, a Coast Guard station, a zoo, and the historic Detroit Yacht Club. The riverbanks offer unobstructed views of the downtown Detroit skyline and the Canadian shore opposite, a vantage point few urban parks can match. On summer weekends, families, cyclists, and swimmers converge on the island, making it the rare green space that genuinely serves as the recreational heart of the city.
