Har Arbel

Har Arbel is a striking basalt cliff rising above the western shore of the Sea of Galilee near Migdal, the biblical Magdala. Its sheer rock faces drop dramatically toward the lake, offering one of the broadest panoramas in the region — across the Sea of Galilee to the Golan Heights in the east and Mount Hermon to the north. In the Hellenistic and Roman periods, the cliff's cave systems were inhabited and, according to the Jewish historian Flavius Josephus, served as strongholds that Herod the Great besieged and eventually captured. A marked hiking trail leads to the summit today, including a short via-ferrata section using iron rungs hammered into the cliff face — an unexpected technical challenge within an otherwise gentle lakeshore landscape.
