Mount Nebo

Mount Nebo, rising 808 metres above the Jordanian plateau of Abǎrim, is one of the most charged biblical landscapes in the Middle East: according to scripture, Moses climbed here at the end of his life, surveyed the Promised Land across the Jordan Valley, and died before he could enter it. His burial site remains unknown, which gives the mountain an enduring theological openness shared across Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Christians erected a memorial church on the summit as early as the 4th century; the 6th-century Byzantine floor mosaics preserved inside rank among the finest in Jordan. On a clear day the viewpoint sweeps across the Dead Sea, the Jordan Valley, and towards Jerusalem — the same panorama described in Deuteronomy, still largely unchanged.
