The Rome Zoo on 17 hectares of former Villa Borghese land - opened in 1911 and shaped by Berlin animal trader Carl Hagenbeck, who built one of his bar-less panorama enclosures here. Today 1,114 animals from 222 species live in the park, embedded in Rome largest urban green space.
