Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Roma

The Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea is Italy's largest collection of modern and contemporary art, housed in a Neoclassical building on the northern edge of Villa Borghese. Founded in 1883, it moved into its current seat in 1915, built for the international exhibition marking the 50th anniversary of Italian unification. The collection covers 19th and 20th-century Italian art in depth: Canova, Hayez, the Macchiaioli, futurists Boccioni and Balla, plus Modigliani, Morandi, Burri and Fontana. International highlights include van Gogh's Gardener, Klimt's Three Ages of Woman and works by Cezanne, Duchamp and Pollock. The tall daylit halls feel pleasantly under-visited next to Rome's ancient classics.
