Bissau

Bissau is the capital of the West African republic of Guinea-Bissau, founded in 1687 as a Portuguese trading post on the Geba River estuary. It serves as the country's sole political, administrative, and economic hub, home to Guinea-Bissau's only international airport and deep-water port. Following independence in 1974, Bissau became the capital of the newly formed state. With around 410,000 inhabitants, it is the country's dominant urban center, marked by remnants of colonial-era architecture and a busy informal street trade.
