Bolama

Bolama sits on an island of the same name in the Bijagós Archipelago off Guinea-Bissau's coast and served as the capital of Portuguese Guinea until 1941, when administrative functions were transferred to Bissau. The town retains the physical skeleton of that colonial era — palm-lined boulevards, 19th-century administrative buildings, and a governor's palace slowly being reclaimed by vegetation. Today fewer than 5,000 people live where colonial officials once governed, lending the place an atmosphere of suspended time. Reaching Bolama requires a boat from Bissau, but the reward is a quietly haunting landscape of crumbling grand facades, rich birdlife, and deep isolation.
