Black Star Gate

The Black Star Gate stands at the center of Accra's Independence Square, crowned by the five-pointed Black Star of Africa — a pan-African symbol that also references Marcus Garvey's liberation movement predating Ghana's independence. The gate bears the inscription "Freedom and Justice" and the date AD 1957, marking the year Ghana became the first sub-Saharan African country to gain independence from British rule, under President Kwame Nkrumah on 6 March 1957. The square and gate were built as a ceremonial statement of sovereignty and remain the primary venue for state parades and the annual Independence Day celebrations. Standing at the gate, visitors look out across the vast parade ground toward the Atlantic Ocean, giving the monument a geographic drama that reinforces its symbolic weight.
