Blue Cave

The Modra špilja — Blue Cave — is a sea cave on the island of Biševo, roughly five kilometres west of Vis off the Dalmatian coast. Its defining spectacle is a product of pure geology and light: sunlight enters through a submerged lateral opening and illuminates the water in an electric, otherworldly blue, most intense between 11 a.m. and noon. The Austrian painter Eugen von Ransonnet brought the cave to wider attention in 1884, publishing vivid accounts of the light display that drew early tourists to this remote island. Access is strictly limited to small wooden rowing boats — the entrance arch sits so low that visitors must crouch to pass through. Outside the cave, the crystalline Adriatic offers excellent snorkelling visibility.
