Lake Bled

Lake Bled sits at 475 metres above sea level on the edge of the Julian Alps in Slovenia's Upper Carniola region, a glacial lake roughly 2.1 kilometres long. On the only natural island in Slovenia, a Baroque pilgrimage church rises dramatically from the water — reached by traditional flat-bottomed Pletna boats rowed by local oarsmen whose families have held the right for generations. The church's wishing bell is central to a local tradition: anyone who manages to ring it three times with a single pull of the rope is said to have their wish granted. Medieval Bled Castle perches 100 metres above the western shore on a sheer cliff, offering sweeping views across the lake, the island, and the Karavanke mountain chain beyond. A lakeside path circles the entire shoreline in just under six kilometres.
