Bojjannakonda

Bojjannakonda is a Buddhist rock monastery complex dating from the 4th to 9th centuries CE, located near the city of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, southern India. The site features cells, stupas, and relief carvings cut directly into the hillside, created under dynasties such as the Salankayanas and Vishnukundinas who patronised Mahayana Buddhism in the region. A nearby companion site, Lingalakonda, completes what was once a significant monastic centre. Visitors follow a path up the hill past carved Buddha figures and votive stupas, with open views across the surrounding plains. The complex is protected as a Monument of National Importance.
