Bavikonda

Bavikonda — meaning 'hill of pots' in Telugu — is a partially restored Buddhist ruin site perched on a hillside on the outskirts of Visakhapatnam, roughly three kilometres from the Bay of Bengal coast. Archaeological excavations beginning in the 1980s uncovered the remains of a monastery complex, multiple stupas, and votive structures dated to the 3rd–2nd centuries BCE, a period when Buddhism spread across the subcontinent under Emperor Ashoka's patronage. Finds including coins, ceramics, and stone inscriptions confirm the site hosted an active monastic community for several centuries. A small on-site display houses key artefacts from the digs. The site sees relatively few visitors, lending it a calm atmosphere uncommon for the densely populated coastal region surrounding Visakhapatnam.
