Bolingbroke Castle

Bolingbroke Castle is an early 13th-century limestone ruin in rural Lincolnshire, founded around 1220 by Ranulf, Earl of Chester. Its chief claim to historical fame is as the birthplace of Henry IV — the Lancastrian king who deposed Richard II in 1399 and set the stage for the Wars of the Roses. Managed by English Heritage, the site preserves remnants of its hexagonal tower layout and a now-dry moat. The grounds are freely accessible, with interpretation panels tracing the castle's Plantagenet history. The melancholy atmosphere of crumbling limestone walls set against the flat Lincolnshire fenland gives the ruin a quietly distinctive character.
