Berwick Castle

Berwick Castle is a ruined medieval fortification on the banks of the River Tweed in Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland, listed at Grade I — England's highest tier of heritage protection. The castle stood at one of medieval Britain's most contested border points: Berwick changed hands between England and Scotland repeatedly between the 12th and 15th centuries, making it a site of prolonged military and political significance. Only fragmentary walls survive today, hemmed in between the town's railway line and the river, lending the site a quiet, weathered atmosphere.
