Aydon Castle

Aydon Castle, formerly known as Aydon Hall, is a fortified manor house dating to around 1296, set in the quiet countryside near Corbridge in Northumberland. Originally conceived as an undefended residence, it was hastily fortified with curtain walls and towers shortly after completion in response to intensifying Scottish raids — a sequence of construction phases still clearly legible in the stonework today. That layered building history makes Aydon an unusually transparent record of how medieval English landowners adapted to border conflict. Managed by English Heritage as both a Grade I listed building and a Scheduled Monument, it ranks among the best-preserved manor houses of its era in the country. Visitors can move freely through largely intact interior chambers, outbuildings, and a walled inner courtyard above the wooded banks of the Cor Burn.
