Zagreb Botanical Garden sits at the center of the Croatian capital, founded in 1889 as one of the green spaces making up the city's celebrated Green Horseshoe — a Habsburg-era urban planning scheme that strung a series of parks and squares through the expanding Lower Town. Run by the University of Zagreb's Faculty of Science, the garden holds a broad collection of native and exotic plant species, ornamental ponds with water lilies, and a small greenhouse. Surrounded by Gründerzeit architecture, it serves as a contemplative retreat in the city's dense urban core. Open Wednesday to Sunday 9am–7pm with a small admission fee; closed November through March.
