Bourgoyen-Ossemeersen

Bourgoyen-Ossemeersen is a 230-hectare nature reserve on the western edge of Ghent, managed by the Belgian conservation organisation Natuurpunt. The landscape is dominated by seasonally flooded wet meadows laced with a network of drainage ditches and canals, making it one of the most important overwintering habitats for waterfowl in Flanders — lapwings, shovelers, and grey herons are regular visitors. Noise embankments were deliberately constructed along the adjacent R4 ring road to buffer wildlife from urban traffic. Marked walking and cycling trails cross the reserve, and several bird hides allow quiet observation without disturbing the habitat.
