Brandenburg Gate

Kaliningrad's Brandenburg Gate — entirely distinct from its Berlin namesake — is a Prussian city gate completed in 1862, and one of the few historic gates in the former Königsberg that still funnels active road traffic through its arch. Built in the neo-Gothic brick style characteristic of 19th-century Prussian fortifications, it stands near the city's southern railway station at the junction of several major streets. The gate survived the devastating Soviet assault of 1945 largely intact, an unusual distinction in a city whose prewar built fabric was almost entirely erased. Visiting it today carries a particular weight: a legible fragment of German-Prussian Königsberg marooned inside a Russian exclave, carrying daily traffic as though nothing happened.
