Bridgeport Covered Bridge

The Bridgeport Covered Bridge, completed in 1862, is one of the longest and best-preserved covered wooden bridges in the United States, spanning the South Yuba River in Nevada County, California. It was built as part of a private toll road serving the Gold Rush-era mining traffic between the Sierra Nevada foothills and the valley floor — the timber roof protected the deck from the elements and dramatically extended its working life. Designated a Historic Civil Engineering Landmark, the bridge now sits within South Yuba River State Park, where the surrounding river corridor draws swimmers, hikers, and families to its clear granite-bedded pools in summer. The setting — old-growth riparian forest, a 19th-century wooden span, and rushing Sierra water — makes it one of the more distinctive heritage-nature combinations in the Gold Country.
