Blankenhagen Castle

Blankenhagen Castle is a vanished motte-and-bailey fortification — a raised earthwork castle typical of early medieval noble seats — whose remains lie near the Aller river at Grethem in Lower Saxony. Thought to have originated around 1200, the site comprised two artificial mound platforms that once bore timber or stone fortifications, with additional raised ground suggesting a former outer ward. Nothing stands above ground today; only the earthwork contours survive, blending quietly into the surrounding floodplain.
