Burg Eltville

The Kurfürstliche Burg Eltville is a Gothic riverside castle built in 1330 and the defining landmark of Eltville am Rhein in the Rheingau wine region. Constructed as a residence and administrative seat for the Archbishops of Mainz, the castle served as a key base of episcopal power along the Rhine during the 14th and 15th centuries — Archbishop Gerlach of Nassau commissioned its imposing keep, which still towers over the town today. The castle now houses a small museum on local and regional history, free of charge, and its courtyard rose garden draws visitors in late spring when hundreds of varieties are in bloom. The keep offers views across the Rhine and into the surrounding Rheingau vineyards.
