Giebichenstein Castle

Giebichenstein Castle rises from a rocky plateau about 87 metres above the Saale river in Halle and ranks among the oldest fortifications in central Germany, with roots stretching back to the early 10th century when it served as an episcopal stronghold under the Ottonian dynasty. During the medieval period it functioned as a residence of the Archbishops of Magdeburg and is said to have briefly imprisoned the Minnesang poet Walther von der Vogelweide. Today the upper castle survives largely as a ruin, while the broader grounds form part of the campus of the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design — one of Germany's most respected art schools. As a stop on the Romanesque Road cultural route, the site draws visitors interested in medieval architecture as well as those seeking sweeping views over the Saale valley.
