Burg Frauenstein

The ruined castle of Frauenstein sits atop a rocky crag at roughly 180 metres above sea level in the Frauenstein district of Wiesbaden, and ranks among Hesse's more legible high-medieval fortress remains. It was built around 1180 by Heinrich Bodo von Idstein to control a strategic ridge above the Rheingau. Protected as a listed cultural monument, stretches of curtain wall and tower stumps survive in good enough condition to convey the original layout. The ruin is reachable via forest walking trails and rewards visitors with open views over the surrounding hills — with no visitor infrastructure to speak of, it retains the feel of an unhurried, off-the-beaten-path discovery.
