Casa di Goethe

The Casa di Goethe at Via del Corso 18 is the only German museum located abroad and occupies the apartment where Johann Wolfgang von Goethe lived between 1786 and 1788 during his Italian Journey. Goethe travelled incognito as "Johann Philipp Moeller" and shared the rooms with the painter Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein, whose famous portrait "Goethe in the Roman Campagna" was created during this period. The apartment opened as a museum in 1997 and is funded by the German Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media. Exhibits include Goethe's own drawings, first editions of the Italian Journey, Tischbein sketches and rotating shows on German-Italian cultural exchange.
