Sforza Castle

Castello Sforzesco is a commanding Renaissance fortress complex sitting on the Piazza Castello at the northwestern edge of Milan's old city. Its foundations trace back to a Visconti stronghold of 1360; after that structure was demolished, Francesco Sforza began rebuilding it from 1450 as the seat of Sforza rule, gradually transforming it into one of northern Italy's most formidable ducal residences. Leonardo da Vinci is documented to have worked within its walls, contributing ceiling decorations to the Sala delle Asse. Following Italian unification the castle served as a barracks before an ambitious late-19th-century restoration returned it to civic use. Today it houses several of Milan's civic museums, most notably the collection containing Michelangelo's unfinished Pietà Rondanini. The broad courtyard, intact crenellated towers, and the sprawling Parco Sempione directly behind make it a natural gathering point for both visitors and locals.
