Château Neercanne

Château Neercanne sits on a marlstone hill just south of Maastricht at the Belgian-Dutch border and is considered the only terraced castle in the Netherlands. The baroque manor house was built around 1698 and is protected as part of a Rijksmonument ensemble. Particularly striking are the vaulted cellars carved directly into the rock beneath the castle — remnants of medieval marlstone quarrying, now used to store thousands of wine bottles at a naturally constant temperature. The château houses one of the region's most celebrated fine-dining restaurants, and its cascading terraced gardens overlooking the Meuse valley draw visitors from across the tri-border area.
