Altpörtel

The Altpörtel is the sole surviving city gate of Speyer and, at 55 metres, one of the tallest medieval gates in Germany. First mentioned in written records in 1176, it once formed part of a fortification circuit that included 68 towers and gates — a measure of Speyer's stature as a Free Imperial City. Over the centuries the tower served variously as a prison, guardhouse, and watchtower before opening to visitors. From April through October, visitors can climb the tower for views across Speyer's old town toward the Rhine — admission is charged, and the ascent is not wheelchair-accessible. Its silhouette anchors the western end of the main pedestrian axis and remains Speyer's most recognisable landmark.
