Checkpoint Charlie

The guardhouse at Checkpoint Charlie is a reconstruction from 2000 — the original booth is on display at the Allied Museum in Zehlendorf. Between 1961 and 1990, this crossing point on Friedrichstrasse was the only official passage between the American and Soviet sectors, reserved for Allied personnel, diplomats, and foreigners. In October 1961, weeks after the Wall went up, 33 Soviet and American tanks faced each other here at point-blank range for 16 hours in one of the most dangerous standoffs of the Cold War — resolved without a single shot fired. The adjacent Mauermuseum, open since 1963, documents the ingenuity of escape attempts: cars with hidden compartments, homemade hot-air balloons, and even a self-built submarine. Today the site is ringed by souvenir shops and actors in US uniforms posing for tips — a jarring contrast to the lethal stakes that once defined this small stretch of pavement.
