Alexanderplatz

Alexanderplatz — universally called 'der Alex' — is the gravitational center of East Berlin, a vast square shaped by GDR urban planners as a showpiece of socialist modernity. The 368-meter TV Tower, inaugurated in 1969, defines the city's skyline and carries a famous irony: sunlight reflecting off its spherical top creates a cross-shaped glare that East Berliners mockingly dubbed the 'Pope's Revenge' — an embarrassment for an officially atheist state. The World Time Clock, installed the same year, is a rotating steel sculpture displaying 148 time zones and remains Berlin's most-used meeting point five decades on. After reunification, fierce debate erupted over redeveloping the square; the socialist spatial layout largely survived intact. Today the Alex is one of Germany's busiest transit hubs — S-Bahn, U-Bahn, and tram lines converging daily for hundreds of thousands of commuters — while the TV Tower offers panoramic views across the capital from its observation deck at 203 meters.
