Berlin Wall Trail

The Berlin Wall Trail traces 160 kilometres of the former border that completely encircled West Berlin from 1961 to 1989, making it one of the most historically charged long-distance routes in Europe. Opened in 2002, the path alternates between cycle paths through dense urban neighbourhoods, quiet forest sections on Berlin's outskirts, and roughly 30 kilometres of waterside passages along the Havel, Spree, and Teltow Canal. More than 140 people died attempting to cross the border; information panels, preserved wall fragments, and memorial stones mark key sites throughout. The less-visited eastern sections between Treptow and Pankow retain original border patrol paths, where the physical absurdity of a death strip cutting through a living city is still palpable. The full loop takes three to four cycling days and offers a rare, ground-level panorama of what division actually looked like.

The former border looped around West Berlin as a marked running/cycling route, with memorial points every 200 m.
