Berghain

Berghain occupies a 1950s East German district heating plant on the border between Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg — a brutalist concrete shell whose turbine hall rises up to 18 meters, giving the music an almost sacred acoustic weight. Opened in 2004 by Norbert Thormann and Michael Teufele as the successor to the Ostgut club, it became the most influential address in Berlin's techno scene and shaped the careers of residents including Ben Klock and Marcel Dettmann. Cameras are banned, phones are stickered over, and door selector Sven Marquardt's admission policy has become globally mythologized — those who enter find a world of deep bass, minimal lighting, and a queer-friendly freedom that stretches the weekend into Monday morning. The Panorama Bar upstairs offers a slightly brighter counterpoint, but flows as one continuous event with the main floor below.
