Corredor Ecológico del Noreste

The Northeast Ecological Corridor Nature Reserve stretches along Puerto Rico's northeast coast between Luquillo and Fajardo, bounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the north and PR Route 3 to the south. Designated a protected reserve by Governor Aníbal Acevedo-Vilá in April 2008 and almost immediately de-listed by his successor, the area's contested political status spotlighted its ecological importance — particularly as nesting habitat for leatherback and hawksbill sea turtles, one of the densest in the Caribbean. Visitors today find undeveloped Atlantic beaches, trails through tropical coastal scrub, and clear waters suitable for snorkeling, all within reach of the resort towns of Luquillo and Fajardo.
