Agassizhorn

The Agassizhorn is a 3,947-metre summit in the Bernese Alps, sitting less than 1.5 kilometres northwest of the Finsteraarhorn and separated from it by the Agassizjoch col. It is named after Swiss naturalist Louis Agassiz, whose glaciological fieldwork on the surrounding ice fields in the 1840s contributed directly to the scientific theory of ice ages — giving this remote peak an unusually rich intellectual heritage for a mountain with no hut or marked trail. The ascent is a serious high-alpine undertaking requiring glacier travel competence, reliable navigation across permanent snowfields, and sound route-finding on the upper ridge. Those who make the summit are rewarded with an uncrowded panorama across the major Bernese four-thousanders, including the Finsteraarhorn, Aletschhorn, and Jungfrau, in a solitude that the more famous neighbouring peaks rarely offer.
