Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica

The Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica is Italy's national old-master collection spanning the 13th to 18th centuries, split between two Roman Baroque palaces. In Palazzo Barberini, completed in 1625 by Bernini and Borromini for the family of Pope Urban VIII, you find Raphael's Fornarina, Caravaggio's Judith and Holofernes and Hans Holbein's Henry VIII. Pietro da Cortona's ceiling fresco Triumph of Divine Providence takes a whole hall. The second site, Palazzo Corsini in Trastevere, holds the largely intact 18th-century Corsini family collection with Caravaggio, Guido Reni and van Dyck. Both palaces are covered by one affordable ticket and are usually far quieter than the Vatican Museums.
