Heidelberg Castle

Heidelberg Castle is one of Germany's most celebrated ruins, its red Neckar sandstone walls rising dramatically from the northern slope of the Königstuhl above Heidelberg's old town. Originally a medieval fortress, it was expanded over the 14th to 17th centuries into a grand Renaissance palatial residence for the Prince-Electors of the Palatinate, placing it at the heart of Holy Roman Empire court life. French forces devastated it in 1689 during the War of the Grand Alliance, and a lightning strike in 1764 gutted the last habitable wings — leaving the romantically crumbling silhouette that has captivated painters and writers since the Romantic era. The castle today houses the German Pharmacy Museum and hosts the annual Heidelberg Castle Festival. Its terraces offer sweeping views across the old town, the Neckar river, and the Upper Rhine Plain.
