Bergfeste Dilsberg

Bergfeste Dilsberg sits atop a striking sandstone spur east of Heidelberg, commanding sweeping views over the Neckar valley and the Odenwald hills. Founded around 1150, the fortress served the lords of Steinach and later the Palatinate Electorate as a defensive stronghold — its massive ring wall survives almost entirely intact, a rarity among High Medieval fortifications in southwest Germany. Uniquely, the settlement that grew inside the protective walls evolved into the present-day village of Dilsberg, one of the few places in Germany where an entire community remains encircled by its medieval fortifications. Visitors can climb the watchtower for panoramic views, walk the original ramparts, and reach the site via hiking trails from the Neckar valley below.
