Kriemhildenstuhl

The Kriemhildenstuhl near Bad Dürkheim is a remarkably well-preserved Roman quarry in the Palatinate Forest, operated around 200 AD by the 22nd Legion, which was garrisoned at Mainz some 60 km away. Legion inscriptions and masons' marks chiselled directly into the rock face survive to this day — rare physical evidence of the Roman military's supply chain and construction logistics, likely feeding building projects along the Upper Germanic Limes. The site is protected as a cultural monument and reached via forest trails. For visitors, the combination of steep sandstone rock faces and legible Roman carvings offers a tangible, quiet encounter with the working life of Rome's frontier army, far from any museum context.
