İkinci Mahmut Han Çeşme ve Sebili

The Fountain and Sebil of Sultan Mahmud II is an Ottoman street monument occupying a street corner in Istanbul's Fatih district. It was originally commissioned in 1746 by Ayşe Kadın, chief consort of Sultan Mahmud I, as a public charitable endowment — the sebil, a latticed kiosk dispensing free water to passers-by, was a hallmark of Ottoman pious architecture. Falling into disrepair, it was substantially rebuilt in 1830 under Sultan Mahmud II, giving the structure an identity tied to two rulers. The building now operates as a small shop serving Hatay-style künefe and katmer, making it a rare case of Ottoman civic infrastructure surviving in uninterrupted street-level use. Stone ornament on the curved niche is partially obscured by modern signage, but the ensemble's scale and corner placement still read clearly against the surrounding streetscape.
